Under current "crisis" circumstances I'm putting my driver's hat back on! Yes, Uncle Pasha himself will drive you around!! Use this opportunity to remind me of my place in life!!!

Here is my "new" vehicle. Fits 4-5 passengers + 5 suitcases for those who prefer travelling in crowds. Air conditioning will be activated if my clients persistently demand it. Four wheel drive to take you anywhere. Long-distance trips no problem. Camping gear available for those who wish to save of hotels. Rear seats unfold into a small bed. SOON!! Utility trailer

Your financial contribution:

Sheremetyevo to anywhere in the center of Moscow - $70

Domodedovo to anywhere in Moscow - $100

Domodedovo to Sheremetyevo - $150 (takes a good part of the day)

Hourly rate: $30 (about 20Euro) per hour or $300 per day. Fuel may be extra for long trips but in most cases is included. A reasonable amount of assistance in trip planning is complimentary. Discounts possible for charitable or other "do good" projects.

In exceptional cases (I know you, am of good opinion of your ability to drive in Russia, and am convinced that you will compensate damages that result from such foolishness as driving in Russia) I will consider letting you borrow the vehicle.

NEW!!!
March 25, 2009

This old Renault Encore participated in several notable projects. The two most memorable ones are the filming of a documentary on Russian women (about 2005) and a documentary on orphanages (2002?). A list projects where I participated will be posted on my www.oldmanfriday.com page

This Volga served me during her brief times out of the repair shop till March 2008. Presently sitting at my dacha. Can be made to run. Available for sale for an equivalent of $200, which is its price as scrap metal. You may consider purchasing it to enhance your Russian Misery Travel© experience.

Knowledgeable advice, help buying tickets, last minute accommodation arranged, assistance if things don't go quite as expected, all-around support of the sort that can't possibly be expected from a taxi driver. Isn't it worth a few bucks extra? But it isn't. My airport pickup charges are on par with Moscow average, and per-hour rate is less than that of a driver and interpreter combined.

Time and traffic permitting your trip to the airport can be turned into an exciting tour along the Kutuzovksy Prospect

Airport pickup
Sheremetyevo 1, Sheremetyevo-2,
Domodedovo, others

I normally do airport pickups myself to give us a chance to discuss your plans, concerns, and special needs. If I'm not available, my two reliable trusted English-speaking colleagues Slava and Vladimir will look after your transportation needs, and Olesya will take care of scheduling and tickets.

Reliable and inconspicuous car (Renault 11) that won't attract undesirable attention. Anybody who has travelled in Russia by car is familiar with the hassle of three document checks per day. This humble vehicle gets stopped no more than twice per month of intense driving. And, knock on wood, it hasn't been broken into yet in Moscow, and just once (in 10 years!) outside of Moscow, in the city of Ryazan famous for its street crime. Play it down while travelling in Russia, and this car is just right for keeping undesirable attention away.

Roomy hatchback big enough for a small horse.
(This is Lyagushka/Froggy at our dacha trying to get to some spilled oats).

Roof rack will take another couple of suitcases.

Russian driving style concerns you?

I receive regular comments to the effect that I'm one of a few Russian drivers who don't scare passengers. Not with my driving anyway. Defensive driving habits acquired in Canada, and over 20 years of accident-free driving in both countries. I've even worked as a school bus driver in Toronto for a few weeks!

Expected contribution to the car upkeep is $40 from Sheremetyevo to anywhere in the center of Moscow. $50 to the outskirts of Moscow, and $70 to travel between Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo (nearly 90km, 3+ hours in your average daytime traffic). Or I can be hired at $20/hour, $200/day with no time limit, no extra charges (gas, parking etc. included). Please note that it is cheaper that hiring a driver, an interpreters, and an all-around-fixer separately.

Well equipped for the many surprises and contingencies of Russian roads. Here is an example of my little vehicle going where it was never intended to.

No place is too far. No weather too cold. No snow too deep. I'll get you where you need to be, and act as your guide and interpreter, fix your little problems, and do everything to help you concentrate on whatever brought you here.

Tver region near Volokolamsk.

Note the relationship between the road and the church. The metaphor is intentional.

Back to getting you from/to the airport...

A cheap and reliable option: When available I can sent Olesya or Catherine to the airport by public transportation to meet and greet and take you to your destination. Travel time will be about the same but the degree of reliability higher. And the costs lower. Sheremetyevo (SVO, Sheremetovo) to Moscow or Domodedovo to Moscow: $25.

Want to really save? Here are instructions on how to get from Sheremetyevo on your own. It will cost you a couple of dollars. Recommended to seasoned travellers only who accept an elevated level of risk.

Domodedovo to Paveletsky by a dedicated commuter train - proceed here.
